Many people who work with children are aware that parents have a greater influence on their children than the famous schools their children attend. In many cases parents put most of their energy and time in planning their children’s academic pursuits and support the to “win at the starting line”, but neglect their children's emotional health and the parent-child relationship. A healthy parent-child relationship can prevent future problems and is also a good remedy for dealing with children's emotional and behavioral problems in the future. In view of this, we would like to promote "Parent Child Relationship Therapy" to every parent in Hong Kong.

For more than ten years, play therapy has been extensively employed by social workers and counselors in practice in Hong Kong. There are different pathways of training such as in service training offered by institutes such as Chinese University Continuing Professional Education (Taught by Ms. S H LAU, also supervisor of this Association), and the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of HK (Taught by Dr. Iris YF CHAU, chief supervisor of the Association). Some social workers and counselors received their training overseas. Yet “Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT)” is not currently offered as a course in universities. In the past, Dr. Chau had led more than ten social workers and counselors to provide CPRT for parents of kindergartens of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. Ms. LAU Suet Ha is often invited to conduct CPRT training courses for many social work organizations.  All trainers of our association have degrees either in social work or counseling and more than 70% of them got a master degree.  In order to promote the parent-child relationship therapy with assured quality, we provide content training and supervision for the trainers, and arrange for the trainers to have at least one complete course of co-facilitating with experienced trainers before they can lead the CPRT group independently.

Vision

Teachers, nurses and first-responders all required training, but parents who affect their children's life most often lack training. They just follow in the footsteps of the previous generation or their peers. Their parenting may have an adverse impact on their children. Our ultimate goal and mission are to have every parent in Hong Kong with children between the ages of 2 to 10 receive training on "Parent-Child Relation Therapy", just like parents of newborn learn to breastfeed, bathe and change diapers. Changes in parents can affect a child's life. We especially want to support families from the grassroots, who may have more struggles and yet fewer resources in the midst of their difficulties.
